Dancers For National Gun Violence Awareness Day

In January 2013 15 year old Hadiya Pendleton was tragically shot and killed in a playground in Chicago. Soon after Hadiya’s death her friends decided to honor her life by wearing orange, noting it is the color that hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves. Ever since then orange has become the official color of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, honoring the more than 100 people who are shot and killed everyday in America. Each June people gather around the country to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day, also known as Wear Orange to bring awareness to this issue and honor survivors of gun violence. For the last four years notable members of the dance community in America have been a part of a social media campaign that reached more than 307,800 followers to help illuminate this issue and support gun violence survivors.
